PlayFace_International Summer Workshop

St.Petersburg State University of Film and Television and famous Danish collage artist Sergei Sviatchenko are calling students and professionals to take part in the workshop

“PLAYFACE”

July 21st – 24th 2015

The idea of the project is the developing of the personality through the reflection in each other's in order to evoke participant's unusual thinking by involving them into art process.

Sergei Sviatchenko: “My works explore everyday objects with the use of photography and collage elements, which are turned into scarp contoured, sculptural expressions. The precise and clean cut composition of colour and shape suggests, in a poetic, consistent language, that the fragmentation of contemporary, nomadic, globalized life does not drain it of meaning. The works show the process of navigating through the rapid flow of visual impressions that the contemporary consumer is constantly confronted with.

In my opinion, creating a collage is the most simple, effective and universal process of activating our creative subconscious on the level of creation a unique product of the Arts.

All of us have huge creative potential in the depths of our subconscious, but we do not know or forget about its existence. Our task is to sensitize or to wake up it. My approach to collage creation based on a poetry and spontaneity combination of different elements to reach “aesthetic astonishment”.  The aesthetic astonishment (the term introduced by me) is the main method of the work. It means the process of a passage from well-known to unknown things on the subconscious and associative, impulsive level deriving inspiration in the depths of our memory (especially child). All levels of population including all ages and social groups can be involved in this process. The result is always of high artistic quality”.

Who is Sergei Sviatchenko?

Richard Brereton (CUT & PASTE – 21st Century Collage / Laurence King Publishing, London): “Every now and then we recognize someone who has an authentic voice, Danish collage artist Sergei Sviatchenko is such a person and one of the leading figures in contemporary collage. Rightfully he recognizes the importance of connecting the visual arts to all aspects of contemporary culture”.

Alex Kierrumgaard: "Mr. Sviatchenko often express himself via photo collages. A discipline in which he is considered one of the most important living protagonists we have today. He spans through the known and the unimaginable, and his artwork cuts through the boundaries of traditional and contemporary visuals, and he elegantly merge pop culture with politics, personal memories, history, architecture and science with logic and dreams".

"In our world of sensory overload, Sergei Sviatchenko stands out as an artist with unique vision. This vision encompasses our ever-shifting visual culture while maintaining a precise, individual voice that continues to delight, surprise, and inspire." (Everything Goes Right & Left If You Want It. The Art of Sergei Sviatchenko. Arguably one of the most influential innovators of modern collage. The first comprehensive collection of Sviatchenko’s collage and painting. Gestalten).

From the very beginning the Institute provided training in two degree programmes covering scientific and art photography. It became the Institute of Motion Picture Engineers in 1930. It has developed into a multidisciplinary institution offering degree programmes in the fields of audiovisual engineering, economics and audiovisual arts. It was granted official state university status in 1998.

The training provided by St.Petersburg State University of Film and Television differs from the training provided by other institutions in the field. Whereas the training provided by the other institutions in the field of information and television technology is usually technical oriented, the students at the St.Petersburg University of Film and Television study image and sound as a means of artistic expression as well. This is a fundamental element of the education provided by St.Petersburg University of Film and Television. This element is fruitful. The University attracts an increasing number of students.
