World Media Community Recognises Achievements of St. Petersburg Scientist

19 January 2021

Konstantin Glasman, a head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory of the St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television, was elected a member of SMPTE (the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) Board of Governors and a Regional Governor of EMEA, Central and South America Region.

SMPTE is the global society of media professionals, technologists, and engineers working in the digital entertainment industry. The Society’s vision is enabling the technical framework and global professional community that makes motion picture, television and professional media available for all humanity to enjoy for artistic, educational and social purposes.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) was founded in 1916, and has received a number of Oscar and Emmy awards. The organisation has developed thousands of technical standards and related documents for broadcast, filmmaking, digital cinema, audio recording, information technology (IT), and medical imaging, and over 800 of them are still in use today.

For the first time in a 100-year history of SMPTE, a Russian scientist was elected for such a high position, the world media community to have recognised a high level of scientific research under Professor Glasman’s supervision in the St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television.

Prof. Glasman notes it is important the students use the language of the chosen profession during their training:

I always taught students to speak the motion picture and television industry’s technical language. It was actually the SMPTE language. I created the first Russian SMPTE student chapter. Three managers of the Russian SMPTE section are my students. And it’s only the beginning. My focus is to stimulate young motion picture and television researchers, engineers, creatives and students to contribute to SMPTE activities!

Konstantin Glasman has a lot of achievements and awards in quality assessment of audiovisual materials in digital TV systems and cinematography. He is the author of over 70 scientific works, a member of many international organisations that make equipment to provide audiovisual content.

The St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television heartily congratulates Professor Glasman and wishes him more discoveries and successes!
